Player vs Player ⚔️

Some of the most memorable moments in the world happen when two real players meet in the open field and decide to settle it the old-fashioned way. PvP — player versus player combat — is where reputation is built, rivalries are born, and the difference between a careful adventurer and a feared name on the map is written.

This guide covers how open-world combat works, the risks and rewards of raising your hand against another player, where you're safe, and the different ways to test yourself against living opponents.

How open-world PvP works

Out in the wider world — away from the protected zones — players can clash. Engaging another player turns an ordinary trip across the map into something with real stakes: every traveller you pass could be a potential ally, a trade partner, or a threat.

The world tracks your conduct through a personal PK value. Stay peaceful and your name stays clean. Start cutting down other players and that value climbs, your name shifts toward red, and you step onto a ladder of escalating notoriety — and escalating consequences.

The risk-and-reward ladder

This is the heart of open-world PvP, and it rewards knowing exactly what you're getting into:

  • A clean (blue) name carries almost no risk. A peaceful player who falls in a fight stands to lose practically nothing — your gear and your bags are overwhelmingly likely to come through untouched. Defending yourself is safe.
  • The more players you slay, the deeper red your name turns. Each rung up the ladder marks you as a more dangerous — and more wanted — figure.
  • The redder the name, the heavier the price of dying. As your notoriety climbs, the penalties for being killed grow with it: a real chance of dropping equipped gear and items from your bags, plus wear on your equipment. Killers at the top of the ladder gamble the most every time they fight.

That trade-off is the game within the game. A predator who racks up kills becomes a glittering target — bringing one down is a genuine prize for everyone else. Choosing how far up that ladder you're willing to climb is one of the most important decisions an open-world fighter makes.

Safe zones

You are not exposed everywhere. Protected areas exist where open-world penalties don't apply — the settled, civilised corners of the world, the kind of places you return to between fights to regroup, repair, restock and trade without watching your back. Step beyond them into contested ground, and the open field's rules take over again.

Knowing exactly where protection ends is a core PvP skill in itself: the smartest fighters pick engagements with an exit in mind.

Other forms of PvP

Open-world combat is only one face of player versus player:

  • Duels — a one-on-one challenge between two players who both agree to fight. A clean way to test builds, settle scores, or just spar, with none of the open-world stakes.
  • Guild battles — organised, large-scale warfare between guilds, where coordination, composition and timing matter far more than any single hero. This is where the biggest names and the strongest communities prove themselves.

Each format rewards a different style — the careful duelist, the fearless field hunter, and the disciplined guild line all have their moment.

Tips for new fighters

  • Defend freely. Standing your ground when attacked won't blacken your name, so don't be afraid to fight back.
  • Decide your line. Think about how far up the notoriety ladder you actually want to climb before the first kill — the deeper the red, the more you stand to lose.
  • Learn the map's safe spots. Knowing where protection begins and ends turns a risky crossing into a controlled one.
  • Gear and repair before you roam. Out in contested ground, durability and a full kit matter.

FAQ

Will fighting back against an attacker turn my name red? No — defending yourself is safe. Notoriety builds from going on the offensive and slaying other players, not from surviving an ambush.

What happens if I die in open-world PvP? It depends on your notoriety. A clean-named player risks almost nothing. The redder your name, the greater the chance of dropping equipped items, bag items, and taking durability damage on your gear.

Where can't I be attacked? Inside the world's protected areas — the settled, civilised zones where open-world penalties don't apply. These are your safe havens between fights.

Can I PvP without the open-world risk? Yes. Challenge someone to a duel for a consequence-free one-on-one, or join your guild's organised battles.
