Tamer
Tamer is the level 35+ profession dedicated to capturing wandering pet souls (Nightmare, Griffon, Selarion, Stormion, Crystal Shark). Adds incubator slots, Soul Trap skill, mid-tier Pet Sphere exchange, and bonus pet XP in Peaceful Valley.
Overview
| Name | Profession: Tamer |
| Ability | Tame souls of rare wandering pets |
| Required Level | 35+ |
| Profession Type | Gathering |
| Required Skill | Soul Catching (taught by Rachel in Hossinger after 10 starter quests from Henry) |
| Related Profession | None required |
The Tamer profession is the dedicated path for serious pet collectors. Where any player with Soul Catching can grab pet souls from designated mobs, only Tamers can capture wandering souls — rare static spawns that drop mid-tier (green/blue) pet stones for advanced pets unavailable through the normal capture path.
Tamers also unlock practical advantages: more incubator slots, exchange of mid-level Pet Spheres into higher tiers, and bonus pet XP during the Peaceful Valley and Shore of Youth expeditions.
How to Acquire the Tamer Profession
At level 35+, with available profession points, visit the NPC Wind Dancer near the Magic Academy in Hossinger. She teaches the Tamer profession.
A new Level 1 Tamer automatically receives the special skill Soul Trap — distinct from the basic Soul Catching skill that all players can learn from Rachel.
Soul Trap vs Soul Catching
| Skill | Source | Targets |
|---|---|---|
| Soul Catching | Rachel (Hossinger Trade Union) — after 10 starter quests | Standard pet drops from designated mobs |
| Soul Trap | Wind Dancer (Magic Academy) — Tamer L1 | Wandering souls at fixed map locations |
Capturing Wandering Souls
Wandering souls appear in fixed locations across Eyrda — most notably:
- Dream Thicket
- Triumph Valley
- Eldaram
They are visually distinct — always rendered as floating "souls," sharply different from local monsters.
Capture Procedure
- Find the wandering soul at its spawn point.
- Reduce its HP by about 50% through attacks.
- Cast Soul Trap. Capture chance is 80% per use.
- If it fails, attack the soul a bit more (lower HP further) and try again. Be careful — too much damage kills the soul rather than capturing it.
After capture or kill, the soul does not respawn instantly — each type has its own respawn timer. A system chat message announces when a soul reappears.
Quality of Wandering Soul Stones
All wandering souls produce green quality stones, with a low chance of blue quality. White quality is impossible from this route — wandering souls are always at least mid-tier.
Wandering Soul Catalog
The available wandering souls scale with Tamer level:
| Tamer Level | Location | Respawn | Soul Type | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Eldaram | 4 hours | Nightmare | 30 |
| Level 1 | Eldaram | 4 hours | Griffon | 50 |
| Level 2 | Dream Thicket | 10 hours | Selarion | 70 |
| Level 4 | Dream Thicket | 10 hours | Stormion | 70 |
| Level 4 | Triumph Valley | 10 hours | Crystal Shark | 70 |
Profession Development
The Tamer levels by incubating pet soul stones — the source of the stone (your capture or someone else's) doesn't matter. Each incubated stone = +1 Tamer XP.
| Tamer Level | Stones to Incubate | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|
| Level 2 | 320 | 320 |
| Level 3 | 960 | 1280 |
| Level 4 | 2240 | 3520 |
| Level 5 | 4160 | 7680 |
This is a long grind — Level 5 requires 7680 incubations in total. The expanded incubator slot count below mitigates the wall-clock time.
How to Incubate
The Incubator is a section in the Pet window (default hotkey P).
- Right-click a soul stone in your inventory.
- The stone moves to the Incubator and starts hatching.
- Incubation time depends on stone color (see Pets for full timing tables).
- When done, a system chat message appears.
- Right-click the incubated pet to move it back to inventory.
Every incubation gives +1 Tamer XP regardless of resulting pet quality.
Increasing Incubator Slots
The default 2 incubator slots are far too few for grinding to L5. Visit Wind Dancer to expand.
| Tamer Level | Max Incubators | Cost (Gold) |
|---|---|---|
| Level 2 | 3 | 10 |
| Level 3 | 4 | 15 |
| Level 5 | 5 | 20 |
5 simultaneous incubations cuts grinding wall-time by 60%.
Tamer Advantages
- Larger incubator capacity for parallel pet progression
- Capture access to wandering souls (Nightmare, Griffon, Selarion, Stormion, Crystal Shark)
- Exclusive ability to exchange mid-level Pet Spheres for higher-tier ones
- Bonus pet XP from Peaceful Valley / Shore of Youth expeditions
- Tamer Level 5 counts toward profession achievement points
FAQ
Q: Do I need Tamer to use pets normally? A: No. Soul Catching from Rachel is enough for normal pet capture and combat. Tamer is for rare-pet enthusiasts chasing wandering souls.
Q: Best wandering soul to chase first? A: Nightmare at Eldaram — accessible at Tamer L1 and 4-hour respawn means many opportunities. Power 30 is fine for early-progression players.
Q: Why does my Soul Trap keep failing? A: 80% capture rate means 1-in-5 attempts naturally fail. Reducing the soul's HP further (down to ~30-40%) raises practical capture odds, but risks killing it. Practice the timing.
Q: Can multiple Tamers compete for the same wandering soul? A: Yes — first to land Soul Trap wins. High-respawn soul spots (Dream Thicket especially) often have rotating Tamer presence at known coordinates.
